“To dream once more I close my willing eyes…clouds interpose, waves roar, and winds arise. I shriek, start up, the same sad prospect find, and wake to all the griefs I left behind.”

Alexander Pope

“The sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.”

Karen Armstrong. A History of God: The 4000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

“And her words flash in his mind, an unconscious surge of her emotions rather than a deliberate touch of her thoughts.”

Marion Zimmer Bradley. The Heritage of Hastur. Darkover series.

“…spreading in fiery points glowing into words…”

T.S. Eliot, The Wasteland.

The music of The Grateful Dead, Phish, White Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, Pink Floyd, Iron Butterfly, The Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, Dwight Yoakum, Alanis Morissette, Dave Mathew’s Band, Tracey Chapman, Jack Johnson, Black Sabbath, Tupac Shakur, Boyz-to-Men, Roosevelt Dean, and Public Enemy.

Many thanks to all the authors of Anchors Aweigh, America the Beautiful, by Katherine Lee Bates, and prayer songs used in the text.

Several lines were borrowed from various poets, including Walt Whitman, Alexander Pope, Gil Scott Heron, Lord Byron, William Blake, Allen Ginsberg, e.e.cummings, Oscar Wilde and Denise Levertov, The Malice of Innocence, and from Karen Armstrong's--The History of God. These lines exist as memorials and homage to them. People quote from poetry and newspapers everyday; characters in stories do the same, whether aloud or in thought. Fiction mirrors life, and life reflects fiction.

Admiral Jeremy Mike Boorda is presented as I remember him, a man standing in the hangar bay somewhere in the Adriatic, as a superior officer with mythological and heroic status, a sailor’s sailor— The words of his speech in the text concerning the war in Bosnia and our mission are his true words, as I remember it, as reported in a December news release issued by the ship for the crew and family.

I consulted many books, essays, articles, blogs and websites in writing this novel—my thanks to them all, with special thanks to...
